On Thursday, January 22, 2026, the House Natural Resources Committee will consider a bill that would prematurely remove Endangered Species Act protections for Mexican gray wolves, the most genetically distinct subspecies of gray wolf in the United States and one of the most imperiled wolves in the world.

H.R. 4255, misleadingly named the “Enhancing Safety for Animals Act of 2025”, would threaten the safety of Mexican gray wolves. The bill relies on incorrect data and blatant misinformation when making the claim that Mexican gray wolves have met recovery criteria. They have not yet recovered.

Oppose H.R. 4255 and Support Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery

Dear [Decision Maker],

I urge you to oppose H.R. 4255, which would remove Mexican gray wolves from the federal threatened and endangered species list and set in motion their path to extinction. Just 286 Mexican gray wolves live in the United States, with fewer than 24 in Mexico, and they face continued threats from poaching and high levels of inbreeding.

Independent scientists say the U.S. needs to have at least 750 Mexican wolves in three connected subpopulations to be truly recovered. If H.R. 4255 passes, Mexican gray wolves will prematurely lose the protections they so desperately need.
