Take Action to Protect the Endangered Species Act

Mexican gray wolf pup The Endangered Species Act is the world's "gold standard" for the conservation and protection of imperiled species. It has prevented 99 percent of species under its care from going extinct, including the Mexican gray wolf.

Even though the ESA has worked for more than five decades in protecting wildlife in danger of extinction, the Trump administration's recent declaration of an "energy emergency" signifies a direct attack on endangered species and the places they call home. A new bills, H.R. 1897 (Westerman - AR), also seeks to gut the ESA.

Given that science has concluded that we have entered an unprecedented period of human-caused Sixth Mass extinction, we need to make every effort to help imperiled species heal and flourish.

Ask your Congressional representatives to stand strong and protect our nation's most effective law for protecting wildlife in danger of extinction.

Protect the Endangered Species Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a lifelong supporter of the Endangered Species Act and someone who cares deeply for our nation's wildlife, I am writing to request that you do everything you can to restore and protect the ESA - the world's "gold standard" for conservation and protection of imperiled species.

H.R. 1897 would drastically weaken the ESA and decrease protections for threatened and endangered species.

The Trump administration's declaration of an "energy emergency" and resurrection of the Endangered Species Act Committee (nicknamed the "extinction committee") directly target the ESA and the species it protects. The extinction committee would have the power to authorize projects that prioritize special interests  even at the cost of destroying an entire species. This will make it harder to protect wildlife from other threats, including habitat loss and those posed by climate change.

The ESA is our nation's most effective law for protecting wildlife in danger of extinction. It has prevented 99 percent of species under its care from going extinct, including the Mexican gray wolf and the red wolf.

Beyond being among the most effective environmental laws, the ESA is also popular. Recent research tells us that the vast majority of Americans support ESA, despite increasing efforts to curtail it.

Given that science has concluded that we have entered an unprecedented period of human-caused Sixth Mass extinction, we need to make every effort to help imperiled species heal and flourish.

While Congressional leaders and lobbyists have spoken for major corporations and special interests, my voice as an American voter counts just as much. I'm counting on you to restore one of our nation's most effective environmental laws.

Please vote NO on H.R. 1897 and protect the ESA.
